Calling all traveling nurses! Travel nursing is one of the best ways to see the country. Now is the time to pick your summer location! Moving with the seasons is an exclusive benefit to travel nursing! Do you want the history of the East Coast? Or an adventure into the vast mountains of the west? Here are the top 5 locations for travel nurses to consider this summer…

1. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

Boston is a must-see for all traveling nurses. Summer is the perfect time to explore this medical hub, whether on foot, by bike, or boat.

The charming cobblestone streets of Boston are filled with endless boutique shops and historical landmarks. Outdoor festivals, music shows, and sailing boats on the Charles River fill the city. From Boston, visit the beaches of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

Boston is home to some of the best, world-class hospitals in the country, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Working at one of these hospitals is a powerful addition to any nurse’s resume!

2. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

Seattle is a fantastic summer destination for foodies. The city is nestled in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Trek to the mountains or nearby lakes on your time off or grab a fresh brew in the birthplace of Starbucks. Perfect for the coffee lovers out there!

Pike Place Market and the Space Needle are all Seattle bucket list items. Exploring nearby Puget Sound and Mount Rainier are good full day activities.

Seattle is a year-round favorite of traveling nurses. Top medical centers include Swedish Memorial, Virginia Mason, and University of Washington. Travelers report these hospitals as very traveler-friendly and accommodating.

3. SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

If you want to avoid the intense heat of the summertime, try San Francisco. Located in the Bay Area of California, it is a must stop for anybody that holds a California nursing license.

Average temperatures in July range from 54-67 degrees. Perfect for the nurse who wants to avoid the heat. In addition, UCSF Medical Center is raved about by nurses and is nationally ranked as a top hospital.

On days off, walk around Chinatown and sample some delicious fresh food! Practice your camera skills by taking iconic pictures with the Golden Gate Bridge or Fisherman’s Wharf. Indulge in chocolate heaven at Ghirardelli Square, or take a drive to Muir Woods, Napa Valley, or Point Reyes.

Remembering 9.11

Today we honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives 17 years ago. The series of attacks against Americans on September 11th were recorded in history as the deadliest attacks in U.S. history.

This week you will likely overhear or engage in conversations about where you were when the planes struck targets in New York City and Washington, D.C.. I often hear people talk about the death and destruction that triggered an enormous effort to combat terrorism. I also remember watching Live coverage from California and the brave men and women rushing toward the danger as it unfolded. Some 400 police officers and firefighters were killed and today thousands of first-responders continue to suffer from the affects of the toxic substances created by the collapsed buildings in Ground Zero.

One of my most profound memories of September 11, 2001 was witnessing the countless number of Americans who responded to assist with the recovery efforts. The spirit of compassion and service could be felt in every part of our country and thanks to organizers at the Corporation for National & Community Service, September 11th has been transformed from a day of mourning to a day of giving back, community engagement, and service.

Please join me in honoring the victims and first-responders of September 11th by participating in this year’s National Day of Service and Remembrance. We enjoy the fruits of their ultimate sacrifice and owe their families a heartfelt thanks and our condolences everyday.

Let's Pause for Friends and Loved Ones

In light of recent high-profile suicide incidents, the discussion around mental health and the well-being of friends and family will inevitable become a topic of concern in your social and traditional media outlets. The Care Staffing Professionals team would like to encourage our visitors, clients, and professionals to be mindful of your friends and family’s well-being.

Health officials recommend that everyone familiarize themselves with the warning signs of suicide, which may include:

  • A person thinking about or threatening suicide or seeking a way to kill themself
  • Increased substance abuse
  • Feelings of purposelessness, anxiety, being trapped, or hopeless
  • Social isolation and withdrawing from people and activities
  • Expressing unusual anger, recklessness, or mood changes

Don’t assume a persons current or prior successes or ability to overcome past obstacles means they will make it through today’s challenges. Be an active listener, express your willingness to provide and seek help, and follow up. We can all prevent suicide.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255). This is a number you can call 24-7, 365 days a year. You can also access a “Lifeline Chat” through the group’s website, suicidepreventionlifeline.org.

Take care of yourself and each other,

D’Andre Lampkin
